Setting Intentions with the New Moon

Updated: Nov 11, 2021

Today’s new moon occurs in the mysterious sign of Scorpio(today, November 4th at 2:14 p.M. PST) and invites transformation. In astrology, Scorpio represents transformation, change, elimination, and rebirth.

This Scorpio season has been focused on immense personal growth, new revelations, and important metamorphosis for all of us.

Lessons, areas where we feel out of alignment, and uncomfortable resistance have revealed what we should remove from our lives in order to make room for our positive transformation.

new moons are a time to set intentions and launch new projects. Since new moons happen approximately once a month and signify the beginning of a cycle, you can think of them as a cosmic reset. It’s the start of a new cycle, a clean slate if you will, and we are recalibrating and redirecting our energy to put ourselves back in alignment with our highest self.

An intention is basically a plan of action. It is an aim that you are taking. You are drawing a map for yourself in order to follow your dreams and to pursue your goals! Remember, Goals are a future thing, and our intentions are present moment.

So what seed of intention do you want to plant? What can you do today that will put you in alignment with where you want to be?

Maybe you don’t know yet what your intentions are, that’s perfectly fine! With the moon in its dark phase, it creates space for our inner light to shine (hello, anglerfish spirit guide).

This is an amazing time to get more in touch with what your heart actually wants! Take time for a New Moon Intention Setting Practice. Commit to this practice, because if you can’t find 15-30 minutes to set your intentions, how will you make time to manifest them?

Step 1: Relax

Begin by finding somewhere to be that is comfortable and quiet, where you won't be disturbed. Feel free to experiment with different positions to discover what relaxes you the most. Maybe you’re sitting in a chair, with your feet flat on the floor and hands in your lap, maybe you have a beautiful space outside where you can sit directly on the ground… whatever helps you calm down and center yourself. You might also find that lighting a scented candle, starting a diffuser, putting on some soft, instrumental music or singing bowls can help you to get into the right frame of mind.

Step 2: Focus

Start narrowing your focus by concentrating on your breathing. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, and breathe deeply and steadily.

Notice how your chest rises and falls. Dismiss any thoughts about your day, or about your current stresses… you can get back to that later if you choose. You are here, now. You can put a hand on your belly and a hand on your heart. When you are breathing into your diaphragm, your belly will move in and out with your breath.

Don't judge yourself if there are distractions, just gently return your attention to your breathing. Count at least 20 inhalations and exhalations but feel free to continue for longer if you need more time to become focused.

Step 3: Open Your Heart

For approximately three to five minutes, repeat a phrase that reinforces that your heart is open to all you can achieve. Saying it out loud is best, if possible. For example, you might say, “I open my heart to all that is possible. I am working towards my higher purpose, and I attract positive things.” or “Dear universe, I am here to connect with spirit, truth, and love. Please help me see clearly in all aspects and help me tune into the greatest good and what is in my heart.” or “God, I open my heart to you and what you want me to know.”

Or maybe you want to delve deeper and do a clarity session to discover your true desires and any limiting beliefs you have surrounding that, so you can lean into a new belief that comes up for you!!

It really doesn't matter what phrase you use, but it needs to make you feel progressively calmer, more positive, and more empowered.

You may also want to visualize your heart opening, perhaps by imagining a glowing light at your center, warming your hand.

Step 4: Visualize Your Desires

Use the full force of your imagination to picture what you want to attract. Use all senses to build this image. For example, if you're working to manifest love, how will it feel to hold your partner in your arms? What will they smell like? What sound will their laugh make? How will they smile at you, and what will it be like to look into their eyes?

Spend as much time building and inhabiting this image as you want.

By taking the time to focus on finding the answers to these deeper internal questions like “what do I want more of in my life... what is my dream”, you’re able to plant a seed of what you would like to manifest into your life on a more soulful level. That seed will continue to grow as you begin to bring more and more of your focus out into the world as the moon grows into fullness once again.

What do you want to call in this month? What are 1 to 3 intentions you wish to focus on for this moon cycle? This is the perfect time to dream big and really get clear about how things would look and feel in an ideal world. The most important part of an intention setting ritual is being clear on what your intentions are; don’t stop visualizing the possibilities until you find one that makes you feel really happy.

Step 5: Embrace Gratitude

Build a deep feeling of gratitude by focusing on all the things that inspire it in your life.

Who and what makes you feel thankful? Picture the things you already have, and really tune into that gratitude. (It’s the perfect month for that here in the States!)

The more you immerse yourself in a feeling of abundance and positivity, the more you attract abundance into your life.

This is an exercise you can do any time for a boost, but it's particularly effective as part of a meditation.

Step 6: Start to Manifest

Finally, open your eyes and reflect on your perspective shift. Then, take concrete practical steps to manifest what you want in life.

Go through each intention one at a time, and focus on how it feels in your body and how it will feel once you have manifested it. Once you have gone through your list of intentions, let go of the attachment to your intentions, and settle into the curiosity of how the universe is conspiring to make your dreams come true. It’s a wonderful practice to end by saying out loud that you are freeing yourself from clinging to your wishes and you are grateful for what you have and excited for what is to come.

I invite you to do what Law of Attraction experts call “living as if” – in other words, approach your day like you already have what you want. How would you act? How would you carry yourself? What would you wear, and how would you spend your time? All of this moves you closer to manifesting your goal in reality.

It is also helpful to repeat your intentions each morning, out loud, as a gentle reminder of where you’re aiming your arrow, so you are more likely to hit the bullseye! I would love to hear what your intentions are for this month! Share them with me in the comments, share them in the facebook group or share with your tribe as a way to commit yourself, if you feel called to do that. I will touch base on the waxing quarter moon, the full moon, and the waning quarter moon to provide some extra support during those pivotal times during the cycle!

Remember you have the ability to make a shift. The power has been turned back over to you, the individual, and allows you the freedom to choose your own reality based on what aligns with your soul.
