Where did persimmons come from?

Mmmmm, persimmons! I love fall fruit season... well I love all fruit seasons, I mean, watermelon?! Can I get a "what what"?! That being said, my Nana's friend has a persimmon tree and is nice enough to send fruit my Nana's way, and she then sends some of the fruit my way too! So, as I'm crunching on this juicy persimmon, I have to wonder, where did this fruit come from?

Persimmons originated in central China, and have been cultivated for thousands of years. Japan start cultivating them over 1000 years ago and the USDA introduced them in the late 1800's early 1900's. Starting with the gulf states but now in the San Joaquin Valley in California, according to fruitsandnuts.ucdavis.edu
