When did World Toilet Day become a thing?

You know how you get those notifications that it's national such-and-such day, or world *this* day? Ya, well that happened today, and it was World Toilet Day. So, of course, I had to find out more. What exactly is World Toilet Day, and why is it a thing?

World Toilet Day was established with the World Toilet Organization on Nov. 19th, 2001. The United Nations promotes clean water and improving the environment, so it jumped on board and made this day "official" in 2013. The day is meant to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. According to worldtoiletday.info, over 4 billion people live without toilets, and the goal is to "leave no one behind" and ensure "everyone" has access to toilets by 2030.
